Fashion on a Shoestring...

 *originally uploaded to foliomag.com

I've always been interested in clothing and accessories and how to put everything together to create a look.  When I was a child my innocence about the world actually enabled me to dress and to "create" that look without thinking about it.  If I thought it went well together then it did.  If I liked it, then it was great.  Think of yourself as a young child or any young child you know or have known.  Stripes and plaids?  Plaid and polka dots?  Part of a Halloween or dress up costume and a pair of jeans?  Rain boots with a skirt.  It worked because it felt good and there was no "standard" to reach or live up to.  No "fashion police" to say "halt, cease and desist with this foolery"...there was a freedom and that sweet innocence of saying "I love this."  Then the teen years roll around and we become aware of our bodies and our sense of colour combination and our "style".  We are aware of fashion magazines (even as young as we were with "Seventeen" magazine) and today's youth have MTV, television programmes and more to preach and dictate what is "cool".  We strive to "fit in".

Did you ever develop a style that you could call your own?  Did you follow the trends?  Were you a victim of wanting to be like everyone else or were you more the hide yourself at all costs behind baggy clothing and hope that no one would notice?

Programmes like "What Not to Wear" seem in some ways to ridicule the style choices of others and yet if you look closely they are sincere in offering options and choices that are flattering to the person (victim?) that has been chosen.  What I always come away with whenever I have watched this programme is the lack of self-confidence in the people who are being "helped".  And isn't that what our fashion sense and style is about?  Having the confidence to say "I like this" and "I look good".  That lack of confidence these people show is more a lack of care about themselves upon a closer look.  There is no sense of pride in how they appear...almost as if they don't like themselves or feel themselves worthy of attention.  I'm also including those who are outrageously over the top in skin tight clothing and inappropriate clothing for the occasion.

Last week my dearest friend sent me a copy of this article that had appeared in their local paper as one of these young women below is related to her by marriage.  I love reading these types of articles (as she knows!) and love to flip through fashion magazines while at the hair salon to see what is current, what works, who is creating what look.  I'm not a slave to any of these publications, but I do enjoy keeping abreast of what is going on.

The article is from the U.K. so some of the designers I'm not familiar with, nevertheless, it is the content that interested me.  Here are these quite young women who are being asked from where they derive their sense of style.  Twice Prada is mentioned and one young woman has a bag (a gift admittedly, but still...) that costs 350 pounds!!!  That translates to about $700 U.S./Canadian.  And she is 21 years of age.  Good grief.    Two young women have a monthly clothing budget of  approximately 200 pounds ($400) per month.  PER MONTH.  The other young woman favours Primark to Prada and has a budget of 50 pounds per month ($100).

They all have an incredible sense of style and excellent taste.  But do you notice what I notice in this photograph?  Do you see the self-confidence that Jenny exhibits?  Do you feel her sense of style and her joy in how she has dressed?  And on a most modest budget..which proves my own theory that fashion and great style can be created on a shoestring.  Obviously the newspaper agreed with me which is why she is featured so prominently.

On a further note to this subject, I've been thinking about my own style over the last few weeks.  Time for a change...gone is the woman who was interested in dressing it up in a specific way.  Newly arrived is the woman who has developed a desire for lounge wear!!  I'm talking comfy lounge pants for winter time and a great sweater or fleece for warmth.  I'm talking about great pjs that can be worn all day if you like...that look lovely and feel comfy!  I'm talking about comfy footwear that says I am at home with myself and I love how I look.  This is for indoor wear only...I have not reached the stage of venturing out of doors in my night wear!  :) And boho -- oh yes, the freedom of boho style!  Or western...not cowboy boots and a holster with a cowboy hat...blue jeans and a great white shirt with a bolo tie necklace or a great pair of earrings.  And boots...any kind of boots...cowboy if you like but I'm talking boots instead of shoes...tall boots, short boots and no heels...I truly believe that this chica is DONE with heels.  I'm talking comfort and elegance.  It can be done.

When I was reading Gillian's fabulous post the other day, this one comment really stood out for me, like a beacon calling to me on a foggy night...

That you challenge yourself to something new...a language, a new road trip, a new "look" (some of us are still wearing the same old clothes we always did, distinguish yourself and redefine yourself, and DON'T care what others say about it....)

Love this post ! I also wish I could give the wisdom that comes with age and experience to my niece and other young women who get so caught up with the labels and looks and base their whole self-worth on how they compare to others...so sad !
I think the need for a new style comes from you being re-born into way of living life. Once you start questioning what is important about life, you start questioning what is important in all areas. Why do we wear clothes ? To keep us warm, to be comfortable in the elements or indoors and also for social reasons. But to wear clothes in ways that make you being feel well - that is the best way to dress. Not saying that the occasional heels may not be in the future - I still love the leg they make and if it is for a rather stationary event that could be okay ! - but comfort, color, softness, luxury, coziness, quality, design and some times washability (what looks good splattered with paint works for me ), those are the things I am choosing to question as I find a new style to go with the new me !
(I can just pray that I find some designers and stores who think the same to come along with me ! ;) )
Happy Tuesday to a Chick who oozes style no matter what she wears !
Love Ya !

What a fun post, Sherry! While, I try to keep abreast of what's happening in fashions, I'm no a slave to it. I wear what I like and put it all together my way. I love beautiful clothes and accessories. I'm very short of stature and petite, so shopping is a challenge. I tend toward classic styles that can be renewed with fresh accessories. It's all great fun! Happy Day :o)

I march to the beat of my own drum when it comes to wearing things. I decided that for the winter, I am going the route that you are going...warm, comfort and elegance! Take a look at the PJ Harlow lounge/jammies. I am in love with them and ordered some yesterday!
Here is the link: http://pjharlow.com/

Now today I am hunting for some cute little flats!

Love,
LuLu~*xoxo

This is a great post, Sherry. I get concerned about all the pressure on our young girls and women to Measure Up in fashion. That transfers over to so many other areas.
I can remember in High School wishing I had the matching knee socks to go woth my skirts like the other girls. Just the fact that this memory comes immediately to mind reveals the insecurity I labored under then.
Now I dress in what I love! If I want to sparkle, I sparkle :) Today it's comfy clothes. Comfort is a major factor if I'm traveling or in the clothes all day.
when I shop, which is not often, I buy only what I love now. My rule of thumb- Love it or leave it:)

Oh yes, I have reached "the age" where comfort is more important than being in vogue. I'm a bit of a hippie, so it's boho, winter largely fleece and wool. Natural, breathable fabrics. Yum!

I watch What Not to Wear sometimes and I have to think that sometimes they appear that...uncaring so as to win the chance to be on the show! (I'm cynical I know!!!)

I am the opposite of most of my friends in that the older I get the more I want to dress more mature or appear older I guess. I'm finding my style evolving into more of a conservative style where as it seems most of my friends want to appear younger :-/

Great post! It was fun and thoughtful! I love what you said about confidence, as I think that is the key to all this. I have clothes that make me feel confident (wide-leg black pants and black cashmere turtleneck) but then there are clothes make me dig into my own confidence even before I put them on. I like to put these on every now and then as sort of a challenge to myself!

LuLu I just found some adorable flats at Boden!

Wonderful post....I've also been interested in fashion since I was a teenager, and I love to dress up on rare occasions. In the last few years I've developed a comfortable style of tailored clothes in neutral colors-classic but boring. I love comfy yoga clothes and often wear them all day, long after yoga class.

Have you seen www.academicchic.com? These young women devote their website to fashion -- remixing clothes for new looks. Fun info which really shows how you can look good without spending a lot of money.

We were just having a conversation, about a sweater. I was sad that this certain sweater, got a bad wrap- so I bought it. And I wore it. My daughter floored me when she asked, if she maybe could have one for xmas. I love that I follow the beat of my own drum! i couldn't keep up otherwise. : )
Go girl!!

I think I’ve been dressing for comfort most of my life although perhaps minus the elegance you’re suggesting accompany such a style. ;)
I have my at home clothes, my out in public clothes and my dress-up clothes.
And even if I could afford it, I could not bring myself to spend $700.00 on a purse!

Awesome post, my friend! There are certain things that have gone the wayside for me, like gorgeous shoes with skinny heels. I am on my feet all day on tile floors...no way! So, my shoes tend to be flat, but oh, so funky! Gotta love funky shoes. I also love Chico's ...wonderful colors. Pricey, but they last a long time. At home, it's men pj bottoms and t shirts. I don't wear most makeup most days, my sleep being more valuable! My natural curl is enhanced by a perm so I can scrunch and go! My keys are comfort and if it makes me feel good. There are things I adore on others but not on me!

I dress in fashions that I'm comfortable in. I'm semi limited due to scars that will show with certain cuts of shirts or dressed that I wear so that's always in the back of my mind.

I don't believe in dressing in a way that spells "sex pot" nor do I want to dress drab. I want clothes that spell "interesting person". I just can't see paying $700.00 for a purse.

I have never been all that interested in fashion. As a former farm girl, I had my "uniform" of jeans and tops and have always tried to look presentable but fashion was never my focus. I admit, I didn't always make the effort I should have when the kids were younger! Since the girls have grown up and are away, I have gone through the typical empty nest syndrom of needing to redefine myself. I am taking better care of myself, putting on make-up and paying more attention to fashion. I need to feel good about the way I look and it is time to focus on making myself better in every way possible.

I think I keep up with styles well enough, but I'm no slave to fashion. I've always been able to find what I like at places like Ross or TJ Max or Marshalls. I do not like to spend a lot on clothes. I guess I have always done my own thing. I like comfort too. hehe.
I believe you just buy what you like and be done with it.
