Traveling with Pomegranates

I read this powerfully moving book when I was traveling to New Hampshire and finished reading it when I returned home.

Written by mother and daughter, Sue Monk Kidd and Ann Kidd Taylor, it is a reflective journal of their experiences while traveling in Greece and France.

It connects with the story of Demeter and Persephone and the significance of the pomegranate not just for Persephone but what it means to Sue and to Ann.

There is joy discovered in the Madonna, found in Greece and in France.  And the black Madonna in France that was central to the story in "The Secret Life of Bees".

It reflects on life as a mother who has been a daughter, the relationship between mothers and daughters, of young women growing older, of life experience and how the changes in our lives are bound to affect us.

To me, this book is a small treasure containing golden nuggets that I was able to relate to and to cherish.  I have no daughters but I am a mother and I have been a daughter.  I am a woman.  That alone was enough.

That Kim served us pomegranates in her fresh fruit dessert on the Saturday night was no accident...it was synchronicity, pure and simple.

I have that book on my wish list, but every time I pick it up, I end up putting it back on the shelf. It's complicated, but I'm a little nervous of reading it because my own relationship with my mom has become challenging lately and I'm worried the book will unearth things I'm not ready to unearth.

Thanks for the recommendation. I just finished Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, all about women in China in the late 18h century. I loved the Secret Life of Bees and will look for this book. I have a daughter and I don't want to repeat what I experience with my own mother. This might be just the thing for a wish list. Thanks for sharing! Enjoy the day! Erin

Pomegranates have a special place in my heart because my husband and son always share one when they're together. No matter what. They bond over a pomegranate. Now that my son is out of the house I always smile when I see pomegranates in the produce section. This book must definitely be added to my must-read list!

Happy Monday!

Thanks for the summary! You are such an avid reader. where do you get the time? I think I'll have to get it. I'm reading a biography on Marie Antoinette and it is so dry....I'm having a difficult time with it. Might need a change and put it down for a while.
Have a great Monday!
Hugs

This one is going on the top of my list.
I was in love with "the secret life of bees". My grandmother gave me my first photo of the black madonna- she purchased it from Poland. I was 8 years old and have been in love with them since.
