Up Before Dawn's Early Light with an Eerie Book...

Up before the sunrise, sipping my first coffee of the day and listening to nothing but the hum of the refrigerator and my fingers as they click and clack along the keyboard.

Making lists of things to do, ideas, disturbing dreams, hopes and dreams, small reachable goals (and some that are rather potentially unreachable...but thinking them is such delicious fun).

Reading this book.  While not being one for "fantasy" or "fantastical" or "science fiction", every now and then I will read a book that allows me to remove all the barriers to "what is" to "what might be".  I felt that way a few years ago when I read Audrey Niffenegger's "The Time Traveler's Wife".  Having enjoyed it so much I eagerly anticipated Ms. Niffenegger's next work, "Her Fearful Symmetry".

It's odd and dark.  Eerie. I don't particularly like the cover (it looks more blue in this photograph -- the book I have is more of a metallic green), although it certainly "fits" what you find between the covers.

The characters are rather empty and difficult for me to imagine or create from their descriptions, save for Martin who seems to come to life on the page.  I'm only into the second part of the book and I will finish reading it.  There is something that is drawing me further into the story to discover how it will end, to see if it will "go" where I think it is headed.

This is the perfect time of day for reading this book -- dark outside, just a little illumination from the lamp beside the sofa.  I'll curl up with my aghan and my coffee to discover what lies ahead for Julia and Valentina...or the Stepford Twins as I've begun to think of them.

I'm hearing mixed things about this book but haven't added it to my 'list to read' yet. Think it might be one I reserve in the library. Enjoy your coffee!

It sounds kind of interesting, wish I had time to read right now!

Since we all loved The Time Traveler’s Wife, I had planned on buying this new one as Christmas presents for my sons’ girlfriends. (Always thinking ahead! Okay, sometimes…) And perhaps one of the boys will think of me??? Love those Chapters gift certificates.
This book sounds different – let me know your final take on it.

Lists are good, even those unattainable dream lists. Keeping things on the list is good for focus and setting goals and working towards things. Lately though I have been thinking about the fact that even on the last day of my life, there will still be things on the list that are undone...I am feeling like I need to spend a little more time celebrating the lists that have all been checked off and a little less on adding things to the list all the time...or maybe just celebrating the fact that I am dreamer enough to create the lists in the first place....does that make sense ?
Not loving "Her Fearful Symmetry" but intrigued enough to finish it. All of the characters seem kind of dead to me or empty of life anyway. Let's chat about it more. Maybe over coffee ? :)
love ya!

I keep seeing this book pop up. Perhaps you will turn a corner and get drawn in. Sounds like it's a fine day for curling up under the afghan.

See, I'm a chicken. I'd scare myself by the sound of the turning pages. ;)

I'm a terrible morning person. The hum of the refrigerator itself would be completely overwhelmed by the sound of my (ssshhh, it's only sometimes!!!) snoring filling the air with blissfully heavy sleep. Somewhat less blissful when I'm forced to come out of it, I confess.

I never read the time-traveller book but heard such amazing things about it...the movie looked terrible though... sigh, why do they always ruin a good book? hehe, don't mind me & my whingeing.

A fantastically poetic and intriguing author is Haruki Mirukami... great short stories for early mornings... or at least how I'd imagine early mornings to be :)

Thanks for your gorgeous comment on my blog by the way. It's so lovely to have you about :)

I miss reading books, getting lost in the characters, worrying about how they are doing long after I finish the book. Now the only thing I have time to read are blogs, which is rather delightful and quite more rewarding now that I think about it!

I sometimes get up very early and have stood in the back garden - ( remember the video bird song i did at 6am one morning ?) with a still silence then the odd bird calling , and before many people are up and the hustle of daily life begins again - just nice to hear " nothing " for a change !

I hope the book is worth reading to the end - and is different in the twist or turn to how you think it will turn out - that`s good when you didn`t expect it !

don't you just love uninterrupted time to escape with a good book? MMM, and for me it would be tea and the afghan. Throw in a piece of chocolate and I'm set. :)

I'm into final third of "Her Fearful Symmetry." I am still not sure how I feel about it. I LOVED the "Time Traveler's Wife" - I've read it twice and cried throughout both times.

This new one .... I don't yet. I'm finding it difficult to figure out what motivates the characters.

I, for one, love the cover. It reminds me a lot of the backgrounds from Carmen's Class.

We really do have a lot in common!!

I have this, but I've not started it yet. It seems to be a book that needs me awake, and by the time I get home, my brain is pretty well dead! Maybe over a long weekend.

i'm reading this book too (about 3/4 of the way through)... i find it really enjoyable to read, but do find a bit of the same difficulty connecting with the characters (i do rather like Martin though... something about his vulnerability really touches me)... but it does have that quality that drives you forward to keep reading, doesn't it... ? ... i've slowed down a lot as i've gotten to this point in the book... interestingly i slowed down at about the same spot when i was reading The Time Traveler's Wife...

anyway, i look forward to hearing more of your thoughts when you finish...
