Last Day of Summer...

First day of school uploaded to flickr by polkadotandplaid August 31, 2009

Last day of summer.

Oh not officially of course, that's not for a few more weeks.

But once Labour Day hits, that's it.

Since I was of school age, Labour Day has signified the last day of summer vacation...the next morning it was time for that first day of school. The new outfit, the new shoes, the new expectations..and the new butterflies about the new teacher, the new classmates, hoping some of them would be friends from previous grades.

This is the last official year I send one of my children off to school the day after Labour Day. But in my heart, no matter what age I live to, Labour Day will always signify the last day of summer.

I still feel that way too, Sherry Lee! Isn't that strange?

It also signifies no more wearing white shoes, etc. ;)
As if...

(P.S. No grape Kool-Aid and the stores are closed. Will lemon-lime Gatorade do?)

The crowds sure were piling on the beach (island) Friday as I was trying to get off it. It's great to have an office over there and even more great to be going the opposite way of a long line of traffic. For most this may be there last getaway before the long cold drudge of winter kicks in and it has been rainy, pouring buckets all day today - oh well.

Yup... Sat. it was beautiful and summery here, but today it feels like September. New beginnings and letting go, that's what September is made of.
Enjoy the process, lovely One !

Dang! You still have a kid in school! Suddenly I feel so old. Mine have been out of the public school system since 2003. I still have one in grad school.
But you are right labor day weekend is the end of summer even if it's not really. Can't wear white anymore.

Ours have gone back to school today - across the road i watched a brother and sister - very different body language going on - the boy was looking sad and dragging his heels , but the girl looked happy and proud wearing her new uniform ! Such a difference !

There is definately an autumn feel out - the smell changes and i`m waiting to take photos !
It`s nice that you signify Labour day as last day of your summer .. i`m not sure when i call mine

Here in Northern California, kids in independent schools started a week and a half ago! Much to their dismay. I love it when summer ends because I move into my favorite bittersweet mode of September and October. Welcome you, O change of light and depth of feeling!

Indeed, that is how we see it. I have noticed the days getting shorter - it's just that more dusky when walking the dogs after supper and while I'm still up at 5:00 most mornings, the sun isn't creeping around until almost 6:00. The beginning of ... the next chapter of 2009. I like autumn, not as much as spring and summer but a darned site better than I do winter!

I look at it the same way...the end of summer!

Every year, it makes me want to wear white the next day. I guess that's the rebel in me.
