A Glimpse..Past to Future...

This is my glimpse for the week. Have you stopped laughing yet?!?!

Looking back through old photographs and this one of a Halloween night. I would have been 4, just turning 5. My sister would have been about 18 months old.

The photo was taken at the neighbour's house across the street. I don't remember this Halloween at all, but in looking closely at my mother's face she is drawn and looks uncomfortable. I'm thinking that it was around this time when she had dental surgery in order to have the partial plate I always remember her with. I'm also thinking she was in too much discomfort to even think about Halloween costumes.

Halloween was never an event with store bought costumes. We decided what we wanted to be and it was always something simple and a costume was rustled up from whatever was in the house. One year I went as a painter, another year a lamp, there were years I went as a hobo and one year as a baby. I usually created my own costumes. It explains where my love of doing this for my children was developed. I recall the year I made costumes for my sister and her friend...they went as a pair of dice made out of boxes I had painted and men's suspenders. Great fun.

But these costumes?? Oh my. I'm guessing that my mother trailed us across the street and our neighbour (her best friend) pulled these together for us. My sister was a pirate and likely wearing a costume that had at one time belonged to the youngest boy in this family of 3 (who were like brothers to us -- we were all very close and spent a lot of time back and forth in one another's homes). Ar matey!!

And me? Well, I'm obviously a super hero. Super Man? I can't imagine anyone would have thought to call me Super Woman...we hadn't achieved much in the way of women's liberation at that time. But dear goodness...I'm wearing a boy's long underwear and the "S" (which could of course be for Sherry) is made with hockey tape! I have no idea what I'm wearing on my head but I'm disturbed that I'm minus a cape..what kind of super hero has no cape?!

Fun memories with laughter included.

This is a glimpse not only into the past but into the future. A little sneak peek into something that I'm working on that excites me very much and will be unveiled in a few weeks. Once a super hero...always a super hero!

Whether that “S” was for Sherry, Super Man or Super Woman – you definitely remain a Super Hero!
I didn’t laugh at the picture but it certainly brought forth a big smile. You and your sister were such cute kids. And did we ever really care what costumes we wore as long as we believed we’d been transformed into something else? Even a lamp!

Looking forward to the unveiling!

Oh - now you have mastered the art of the tease. Hmmmmm what could it be . . .

Photos such as this are bittersweet aren't they. We get a glimpse back into our childhood - and then we notice the fatigue, discomfort or fear or angst on our parents' faces. And then our compassion for them wells up.

Thanks for sharing. You were and are adorable.

Well, it seems clear to me: S is for Super Sherry!!! And a cape is for wearing outside - I am sure you put it on later...
Have a wonderful Sunday! And I will try to be patient until you reveal the big secret!

Hmmm, those creative juices churning again?
We didn't need fance costumes, we had something back then that seems to be greatly missing today .... imagination.

S U P E R SHERRY !!! That kind of sounds like a super hero from Saturday Night Live or something..."able to write six blog posts in one sitting and to make bloggers everywhere feel supported and loved in a single comment !"
Too bad that the photo reminds you of your mom being in pain, but LOVE the kids poses.

Thank you for sharing your 'Glimpse'! I think it is so neat that you made your own costumes and made them for others. My mom always made our costumes... so fun!! HHMM... a glimpse into the future..?? Can't wait to hear that that is about! ;)

Looking at old photos makes time standstill. I loved the expressions on all of your faces. Remember back then the flashcubes were so piercing. Maybe your mom was dreading the flash?

Costumes really didn't matter as much as the participation. You made a great Supergirl!

I think the S is for "Sweet":>) You were clearly happy with your long john costume at the time, and if your Halloweens were anything like mine it was always cold enough for long johns by then! I remember going to the dime store and picking out those thin hard plastic masks, the one that really stays in my mind was the blond princess. I think I even got the cheap polyester (probably flammable) blue dress to go with it. Good times, good times....lol

Love your site, and look forward to reading more.

When you have a second, I'd love for you to check out my thoughts.

Thank you for such insightful comments! I do love teaching, and have wonderful relationships with my students.

I actually just "lost" a bunch to H.S. grad... off to college, but will be I-Chatting quite a bit. I wrote about the sadness ~ "They're All Grownzed Up."

Thanks again for the kind words!

Hi Sherry

I love that your costumes were made at home...

Halloween is not a big thing here. occasionally when my kids were little I let them go around the street with supervision - just for the experience...

Happy days

You got a big smile from me - what fond memories of halloween`s past you have ! And looking back now as an adult at what you wore - i`m sure you had a cape somewhere !

I think home made costumes are better than shop bought ones ! Although i guess some kids may not think so !

Oh how cute! My costumes were usually plastic masks bought at the store. Fun memories! Now I want to dig up old photos....not sure I have many from Halloween.
Thanks for sharing.

This photo is a panic! Yup, your mom looks a little out of it - if she was a celebrity tongues would be wagging about what she was on! You look pretty pleased with yourself as Super kid. We made costumes as I was growing up too. And I have done, so far, for Riley. I love the imagination that comes with making costumes. The store bought ones are OK but pulling together bits and pieces and pretending, well - that's what it's all about at our place.
