"Mom, I wish I was taller."
"Mom, I wish I could drive."
"Mom, I wish I could wear a bra."
"Mom, I wish I had a boyfriend."
"Mom, I wish my hips were narrower."
"Mom, I wish I could fly."
"Mom, I wish I was prettier."
"Mom, I wish I could live near the beach."
"Mom, I wish I could always be on summer vacation."
"Mom, I wish I had a brother."
"Mom, I wish we had an inground swimming pool."
"Mom, I wish I could be a grown up and do whatever I want."
"Mom, I wish I could live forever."
And my mother would say to me, "you'll end up wishing your life away." And she was right. Where does time go? It passes in the blink of an eye. Wasn't it only yesterday I was wishing and wishing?
"Mom, I wish you were still here."

Wow - I love how you wrote this! I got all caught up in a little girl's wishing - a lot like my own - and then your last line took the wind out of my sails. Ah, yes . . . wishes for our mothers. My mother died this year (on my birthday) and I wish she were still here too. Thanks for such a sweet post.
Love, love your blog. Your reading list looks great. Am going to get the Mary Alice Monroe one first.

wishes are okay, and a part of us, I think - little heart longings connected to our dreams, or to our losses...
wishing you love and hugs that sooth your wounded places.
What a wonderful post, Sherry Lee! Yet, wishes are important, just the same...
So sweet Sherry... I love this!
I wish, I wish, I wish. I still wish all the time.
You say it so well.
It was only yesterday wasn't it?
Hugs,
Charlie
Very lovely post. Wishing certain things can be a no no, but there are other wishes that can change a life for the better. Time does indeed go too fast, so make every moment count.
I posted a comment on FB but this is a wonderful blog. I remember wishing for things when I was little and now I wish I was back there!
This one got me. It's so beautifully and perfectly written. Simple and profound.
Isn't that the true ... where did the time go?
so cute. great shot of her making a wish.
That is so painfully true. It all starts so young, and now we are struggling to learn to live in present time. There is no greater pleasure than savouring the moment.
aw, crap, sherry- i had just pulled myself together after a day of emotional meltdown. gah, where's that glass of wine?!
reminds me of my wishes when i was a child - wishing i was older ,thinner etc and before i knew it - it had arrived .
I thought 18 was old ! ;o) and the millenium year i would be 33 and the hope i had .
Where indeed has the time gone ?
This was just beautiful in its simplicity and naive innocence. So true, so true.
If you read this when you were in your 20's would you have understood it? Time does pass too quickly, but I don't think we can coceive of what it means until we are on this side of 40.
