While in the library yesterday, I noticed posters on the wall and an entire shelf dedicated to the birth of William Shakespeare. Not really being a fan of the bard, I realized that (a) I know very little about the man and (b) I've never enjoyed his works. Masterpieces though they may be, I never delighted in the Elizabethan language of how William wanted his works to be read and understood. Perhaps it's the fact that my grade 9 English teacher (my she rest in peace -- I just read of her passing in yesterday's newspaper..she was 88 and all along I thought she must have been near that age when she taught us -- it's amazing how we "see" things when we are children) read "The Merchant of Venice" to us ... amid the (I'm ashamed to say) snores of 25 delightful students.
I have been to the Stratford Festival here in Ontario and forced myself to stay in my seat to watch Shakespeare in the round (class trip) and I proudly watched my son (now a University English & History double major) perform the role of Friar Laurence in "Romeo and Juliet" in a modernized high school production a few years ago. He knows I didn't understand a word he was saying -- I could hear him perfectly. He lost me at "hello" (which of course sounded nothing like "hello").
I realize though, that much as I may not be a scholar of Mr. Shakespeare, I know many of the quotes he immortalized and made famous, the most important of which to me is "to thine own self be true".
Here's a modern tribute to you Mr. Shakespeare...born in late April and baptized April 23, 1564. This one I understand perfectly!

Hail to The Bard - and his everlasting influence!
(I only learned to appreciate his work once I was out of high school...)
Have to say I am a huge Shakespeare fan - the comedies especially, and of course the sonnets ! So glad you have found something to love about him.
Hey ever seen "Shakespeare in Love" ? Total fiction of course, but yummy Joseph Fiennes and I love Gwenyth Paltrow in it too. In my Top Ten Movies for sure !
Happy Wednesday !
what a beautiful video, quite a production.
I'm with you on Shakespeare, he does have a lot to say, but if you can't understand the language ...
My husband, a literature buff and teacher, loves it all including Shakespeare, his favorite though is Hemingway. I'm the math person in the family - we are a typical example of opposite's attract
I have always enjoyed Shakespeares stories. I remember being one of the few in high school english class who could tell what the heck was going on as we read the plays, no doubt due to my being raised reading the King James Bible with all that archaic language:>)
You are right -- he spoke many truths and so many of his words resound today.
:)
xo
I didn`t get to study the Bard at school - and know very little myself ashamed sometimes to admitt - i can`t get into him !
I`ve seen his house in Stratford - a lovely old building i just thought ;o) maybe if i had read his works i would have been more " excited " to see it .
I loved the film - Much Ado about nothing - but that maybe because keanu Reeves was in !! ;o)
Who knows .
I could change my mind and get to read some of his works ...
Oh dear, I have to admit I'm not a big fan, although I will admit that he was an important influence. Billy, I wish I knew you when...
His work is just so much effort for me. It always seemed it was something I was supposed to like, so I've kept silent. Thanks for the opportunity to speak my mind.
Is it just me, or is everyone else looking so much younger?
I always hesitate to say that I'm not a fan of Shakespeare. I do best with The Message version of the Bible, and I've wondered if Shakespeare might be similarly translated. Oh well. I know it's one of the things in this life that I should appreciate but...
Very funny! I can't say I'm a huge fan either. There are some plays of his I like ex. Romeo & Juliet.
What a coincidence.... my son has a double major in English and sociology. He has made it his goal to read all of Shakespeare's work.
And I hope he does.
BTW...love Taylor!
I am not a fan either but LOVE Taylor!
Glad you have a new furnace and it's amazing your other one lasted so long!
Love,
LuLu~*xoxo
