Reading and Reflecting...

"Reading without reflecting is like eating without digestion" - Edmund Burke

I love this quote by Edmund Burke...how often do we read and move on? Read something and simply allow ourselves to be entertained? Or take in words as simply words and not take that monent to reflect about what someone has said or intended? We might read something written to us in an email or a letter and take it at face value...we might misinterpret the meaning because we didn't take the moments to reflect about what the person was saying, what they meant, where they were in "that moment" when they said what they meant. Life is fast paced, it moves in the blink of an eye. What would happen if we stopped long enough to think about what we've read, what is behind the words that have been chosen?

Wonderful quote – especially for those of us who equate reading with feeding the mind, body and soul.
I do reflect upon what I read in books – but probably not as often as I should.
And as for the what is written in emails, letters, etc., it’s always best to read those carefully – not only for the wisdom you may find in someone else’s words but because of the risk of misinterpretation.

So so true ... we are far too fast pasted in most cases.

Hi Sherry Lee,
I just found your blog days ago through another blogger and I am loving it.
I also gave your blog a shout out of a friendship blog award, so when you get a chance, check it out.
Your blog is very inspiring.

I like that quote, ordered the book after your post on it & just got it a few days ago, looking forward to reading it once I get through others I've started, but did read the preview part.
I sometimes cringe at only writing things such as in an e-mail, it is so often mistaken. So much is lost without expressions, tone of voice, or body language, but if someone knows you and would take the time to reflect & consider different meanings there might not be that miscommunication.

I have a few books that i dip into now and then - and every time i see something i missed beforehand - and it depends what state of mind i am in i suppose to notice it .

As for emails - although i like keeping in touch this way ..
I have said on the odd occasion - i hope you understand as you`re only reading this and it doesn`t come over as " bad " - it doesn`t convey emotions like saying it to their face .Yes you can put love . hugs thankyou`s etc .. and it is a " convenient " way to keep in touch - actual letter writing is a dying art these days !
I feel it is a more personal touch - but sadly things change and our lives are busy - and to email is an easy / cheap option
and unload your " guilt " .
